THE AMERICAN RED CROSS
NATIONAL
To the American National Red Cross,
Washington, D.C.
The death of Miss Jane A. Delano, Director General of the
Department of Nursing, comes as an irreparable loss to the nursing
profession. As Chairmen of the National Committee on Red Cross Nursing
Service from its establishment in 1909 to her death on April 15th, and as
Superintendent of the Army Nuxse Corps in 19o9 to 1912, to her strong
executive ability and her vision of future needs is due the splendid
co-operation now existing between the War Department, the American Red Cross
and the nurses of this country who have par ticipated, to the number of
25,000, in war service.
As President of this organization from 1910 to 1912, she was
well-known to almost every nurse in the United States. Her simplicity,
her kindly humour, and her deep understanding have brought her love
as
well as admiration and respect. She, like Florence Nightingale, com-
bined the hignest idealism with the most practical forms of every day
service. That she should have died in line of active duty at Savaney,
France, marks the final sacrifice of a life devoted entirely to service.
