FORM NATIONAL OFFICERS RED CROSS WAR COUNCIL DY APPOINTMENT OF THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES WOODROW WILSON, PRESIDENT - - ROBERT w. DE FOREST, VICE-PRESIDENT HENRY P. DAVISON, CHAIRMAN JOHN SKELTON WILLIAMS, TREASURER JOHN D. RYAN JOHN w. DAVIS, COUNSELOR CORNELIUS N. BLISS, JR. STOCKTON AXSON, SECRETARY THE AMERICAN RED CROSS HARVEY D. GIBSON - GEORGE B. CASE NATIONAL HEADQUARTERS ---- WILLIAM HOWARD TAFT CHAIRMAN CENTRAL COMMITTEE EX OFFICIO ELIOT WADSWORTH, VICE-CHAIRMAN WASHINGTON, D. C. WILLIAM HOWARD TAFT HARVEY D. GIBSON, GENERAL MANAGER ELIOT WADSWORTH April 30, 1919. L Miss Clara D. Noyes, Nursing Service, American Red Cross. My dear Miss Noyes: I have had some conversation with Miss Pickett regarding an article for the magazine on Miss Delano. The customary "funeral oration" is a thing to be dreaded, particularly in her case. It always seems so hollow and forced. It seems to me so true a story can be told about her life and work - told as it really was. But to the big public that did not know her she was simply an impressive figure. Miss Pickett has suggested that Agnes Repplier might write such an article. She surely could, but I should like to suggest that the simple story of Miss Delano's work, her aspirations, her growth in her sphere and her final accomplishment must be told to a writer in its intimate and appealing detail to enable her to commute it into the human document that will interest and touch all kinds of people - and make the story legible in terms of human feeling. I wonder if Miss Pickett or Miss Nevins - somebody who was close to the heart of the matter, can go to Miss Repplier, possibly with a letter from you, and give her in addition to such printed data as might be needed, the personal facts that will make the article. By this means I can see a possibility of carrying this story from simple beginnings to a very human and very beautifül climax. It might be the progressive drawing of a character to the point of final fruition, naming Miss Delano only at the end of the story. In making this suggestion I am speaking not only for the magazine, which we are trying to bring to a different level from that it has heretofore occupied, but for the cause that Miss Delano represented and for the future Of it. Very sincerely, John munford)
