In preparing some material for my New York speech I had occasion
to review some material on Jane Delano. In looking over the mimeographed
material entitled "Milestones in Red Cross Nursing", I find "Miss Delano was
born in Mountour Falls, March 12, 1858."
In the Courier reprint, N.H. 463, March 16, 1931, entitled "Jane
A. Delano, the Great War Nurse", I find that she "was born March 12, 1862 in
Townsend, a hamlet on the outskirts of Watkins, Schuyler County, N.Y."
In the official History of the American Red Cross Nursing Service,
Miss Delano's birth is given as March 12, 1862, in Watkins, N.Y.
Coincident with the above, I talked with Miss Rottman, of Bellevue,
following my speech and she asked if I knew that Miss Delano was not born on
March 12th but on March 25th. In asking for her source of information, she said
that this date appeared on Miss Delano's application to the Bellevue School of
Nursing.
Since this is the case, it would appear that there is an error in
"Milestones in Red Cross Nursing."
Without doubt you are perfectly familiar with the above.
