5 : M yllis - September 13, 1941 J Mass u a Mrs. deorge H. Evans, 37 Mansfield St., 55 Everett, Massachusetts. My dear Mrs. Evans: During the interval since I last wrote you I have been vei, Findful of the anxi ety and sorrow which has been yours due to the absence of any encoura iging news as to the possible safety of your daughter. In an effort to find some hope for the recovery of your si sughter and others whowile still missing, we have continued to ex- prore every possibilidity and we still have not abandoned hope. The American Red Cross has continued your daughter's salary and I believe you have been receiving that part of her salary which she asked be paid to you. I am sure you will appreciate that this salary arrangement cannot be continued indefinitely and I now have to advise you that it has been discontinued as of August 3lst. The part of her salary which was to have been paid to her in England is being withheld here at Headquarters and will be paid to you upon final settlement. As you know, the American Red Cross, under its group in- surance plan for personnel assigned abroad, provided life insurance in the amount of $2000. for your daughter. The insurance company has been advised of all of the circumstances involved in the torpedoing of the boat on which your daughter was traveling to Great Britain. How- ever, we have not requested them to pay the benefits because we feel we have not as yet received conclusive evidence, but I will keep you informed of all developments. Very sincerely yours, 8 they Chairman. GPD/en Best Available Image
