E Tity of Detroit DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH HERMAN KIEFER HOSPITAL TAYLOR AND HAMILTON AVENUES GEORGE E. PHILLIPS GENERAL SUPERINTENDENT January 18 : Physical 1941 Miss Gertrude Madley, Chief Nurse, American Red Cross- Harvard Hospital Unit, National Headquarters, A.R.C., Washington, D. C. Mass F Dear Miss Madley: I have your letter of January 16 regarding Miss Evans. This problem brings to mind several similar reactions among our student nurses of the last few years. I do not feel that you have anything to worry about in the present situation. The Schick test was performed by one of the staff of a very reliable hospital, and I would certainly take his reading in this case. The fact that Miss Evans reacted so acutely to Schick toxin does not necessarily mean that she would also be sensitive to horse serum in any antitoxin which she might receive at some later date. It seems in this case that there is a mark ed sensitivity to the protein in the Schick toxin, but this is no indication that the same individual is sensitive to horse serum. I hope I have made myself clear. If not, please let me know. The best of luck to you in your new adventure, and if you have any more problems send them along. Cordially yours, DCY-RW Donalde. Youry (AIR MAIL) Donald C. Young, M. D. 8 Chief physician, Communicable Disease Service r
