I et m ley, Maria 3 Dc-170 1823 -2- Murray Hill 3500, in order to make arrangements for board. They will be well taken care of at either of these places until the office is opened. One nurse in each group is selected by Miss Johnson as the head nurse of the group and until the group arrives in Paris and reports to the representative a of the Nursing Service, Miss Julia Stimson, at 4 Place de La Concorde, Paris, she acts as such. This nurse is also in charge of nurses aids who may sail on the can + ship. Nurses assigned to service under the Red Cross should understand that we on this side cannot promise a definite assignment to any nurse. They are select- ed for service with reference to their preparation for special types of work and are assigned by the representatives of the Nursing Service overseas accordingly, although changing conditions may make this temporarily impossible. They are ex- be pected, therefore, under such circunstances, to accept such assignment as may given them, without question. Nurses serving in foreign countries under the Red Cross are under serious whem ethical obligations not only to the nursing profession but to the Red Cross they represent. They should bear in mind that any slight act of indiscretion the or thoughtlessness on their part may lay the Red Cross Nursing Service and nursing profession of America open to serious criticism. Conditions under their which they probably will be working may call for a complete readjustment of method of living and working and their outlook upon life. We do not look upon your assignment to overseas duty as a sacrifice but as a glorious privilege and an opportunity to carry the spirit of nursing and the spirit of the Red Cross wherever you may go. We shall watch your work with great interest through the reports that are submitted to us by the Representative of the Nursing Service in the country where you may be serving. We are always glad to hear from you at any time and we stand ready to assist you should the need of such assistance arise. You carry with you best wishes for your success. Believe me as, Very sincerely yours, Director, Bureau of Field Nursing Service
