9-12-27 ALICE L. FITZGERALD RECEIVES THE FLORENCE NIGHTINGALE MEDAL. The International Red Cross Committee at Geneva, Switzerland, upon recommendation of the Central Committee of the American Red Croes, com has conferred the Florence Nightingale Medal upon Alice L. Fitzgerald, a member of the American Red Cross Nursing Service. The Medal is awarded to "graduate nursee who may have espec- ially distinguished themselves by exceptional devotion to the sick and wounded in peace and war." The awarding of such & Medal was decided upon at the time of the Ninth International Red Cross Conference in Washington, in May 1912, the bestowal of which was intended 88 the highest honor that could be paid a nurse. The following record of Miss Fitzgerald's life and service, which was submitted to the Committee, indicates a long and devoted adherence to the ideals and standards of the American Red Cross Nursing Service: Place of birth - Florence, Italy. Educated in Germany and France. Graduated from School of Nursing, Johne Hopkine Hospital, 1906. Assisted Messina Earthquake, 1908. Head Nurse, Johns Hopkins Hospital, 1910-1911. Operating Room Nurse, Bellevue Hospital, New York City, 1911-1912. Enrolled American Red Cross Nursing Service, 1913. Supt. of Burses, Wilkes-Barre City hospital, Pa. 1912. Assigned to the British Expeditionary Forces, as Edith Cavell Memorial Suree, December 1917. Transferred to the American Red Cross in France, February, 1918. Served with the Service de Sante, France, 1918-1919. Assigned as Chief Nurse, American Red Cross Commission to Europe, May 1919. Released from the American Red Cross to become the Director of the Nursing Service, League of Red Cross Societies, Nov. 17, 1919. Resigned from the League of Red Cross Societies in the fall of 1921 to accept appointment in the Philippines under the International Health Board of the Rockefeller Foundation, to survey nursing and adviee Governor. Released from the Philippines service in the fall of 1924. Returned to the League of Red Cross Societies for six months in 1925 to relieve the Director of the Nursing Service. Assigned under the Rockefeller Foundation 8B Director of Nursing, Siriraj Hospital, Bangkok, Sima, 1926. DECORATIONS: 1. Medaille d'honneur en Vermeil. 2. Medaille de la Reconnaissance Francaise. X 3. British Royal Red Cross. 4. Silver Medal of the Polish Red Cross. 5. Serbian Red Cross Medal. 6. Italian Red Cross Disaster Relief Medal. 7. Russian Red Cross Central Committee Medal. 8. British Campaign Medal. 9. Victory Medal awarded by the British.
