June 19, 1942 My dear Miss Fitch: I am writing to say that we are very happy to have you in our list of active Red Cross nurses serving our Country away from the mainland of the United States. The adventure on which you are embarking involves many governmental agencies, and the Red Cross, because it is only seni-governmental, is able to help launch it and get it well started. It is, as you know, to be turned over to the United States Government at a given time. There can be no doubt that your mission is a very important one and I know that you can be truly proud to have volunteered your services to go. You will understand, perhaps, that in these war-time assignments it is almost always true that there are periods of very great activity for the nursing group and at other periods such a, group is almost completely idle. It is harder to be patient at the idle times than at the busy ones, but if we recognize such periods as conditions involved in war, I think we can more easily accept them. As you perhaps know, Miss Margaret Tracy, Director of the School of Nursing at the University of California, went to Hawaii with the first group of your Unit. When she returned she came to Washington and after meeting and report- ing to our group here at Headquarters, she went to New York. There a meeting was called to which the following came: Miss Alta E. Dines of the Community Service Soceity of New York; Miss Mary M. Roberts, Editor of the American Journal of Nursing; Miss Julia C. Stimson, President of the American Nurses' Association; Miss Anna D. Wolf, Director of the Johns Hopkins Hospital School of Nursing; Miss Katharine Tucker from the University of Pennsylvania; Miss Marion Sheahan, Director of Public Health Nursing of the New York State Department of Health; Miss Alma C. Haupt, Executive Secretary of the Subcommittee on Nursing of the Governmental Health and Medical Committee; Miss Marion Randall, Nursing Consult- ant in the Office of Civilian Defense, and Miss Dunbar, Miss Banfield, and myself of the Red Cross Staff. You should have seen with what complete attention and interest each one in this group listened to all Miss Tracy had to tell us about the work on the Islands. There was very sincere appreciation of it, I can assure you. I must not run on any longer, so let me say once more that we are proud to think of our Red Cross nurses in Hawaii and to know that when our Government is ready to take on the responsibility for this group of nurses, we can be sure of your cooperation and loyalty. With all the good wishes in the world. Sincerely, your friend, Mary Beard Director, Nursing Service
