May 20, 1942 Miss Henrietta Sophia Fitch 75 Grove Street Montclair, New Jersey My dear Miss Fitch: In case you are wondering what the status of the Hawaii Unit is at present, this is just to inform you that your name is still on the reserve list and we have the same plans for sending the re- mainder of the Unit as soon as transportation is available. We hope to be able to give you at least a reasonable notice, but still wish to advise you not to resign your position until you are notified of a definite date on which to reportl As there is every indication that the nurses will be needed for the duration we feel very fortunate that we were able to secure the services of Miss Margaret Tracy, University of California, who was in charge of the first group, to work out the necessary arrangements for the assumption by the local government authorities of the complete responsibility for the Unit as soon as this is feasible. This is in accord with the original understanding that the American Red Cross would recruit and finance the Unit for a period of six months or until other resources were available. According to the present arrangements, the chief nurse of the Unit is responsible to the local health depart- ment and the Unit is of vital importance to the emergency hospital planning and activities. We are anxious that you fully understand the arrangements and plans in order to avoid possible confusion and mis- understanding and at the same time to prepare you for the opportunity that is yours. As stated before, I shall notify you just as soon as I have definite information as to your assignment to active duty. Sincerely yours, Virginia M. Dunbar Assistant Director Nursing Service D/b
