American Red Cross Chapter Copy of a letter under date of April 20, 1923. Mrs. L. E. Cretter Visiting Nurse Association Detroit, Michigan. My dear Mrs. Gretter:- As you doubtless know, a very important meeting prevented my attendint the dinner to the Visiting Nurses the other night, and this taking part in the public testimonial to your valu- able services to the community. Others may know and be able to speak of what you have done through the leadership you have given the nursing organization, and in all they say I share, but I think no one can have been more acute- ly sensible to that beautiful spirit of service which flows our from your womanhood and motherhood into the channels which enrich our com- munity life. You possess that rare gift of the great heart and the cool head, the magnificient porive power of enthusiasm, and the rare ability to work with and through other people. Through all the stressful months, and even years, when as ser- vantsof the Red Cross we worked together, I was conscious of your firm and competene presence and knew that in that field which you comm manded, we should never be found wanting. Always your connsel on the Board was wise, serene and fully informed, so that you were of inesti- mable value. Perhaps I c uld not have said any of these things, had I attended the dinner, but I want you to know that the desireto express them mingles with my regret at not having been beside you on this occasion, as I am told I was in honor placed. In this regret, believe me, Sincerely your friend (Signed) Gustavus D. Po Note- Mr. Pope was Chairman of Red Cross Chapter
