TOWN AUG & COUNTRY SERVICE. NURSING
From Miss Minnie H. Ahrens

I have written Mrs. Gretter concerning Special Service Chevron. Mrs.
Gretter is in all probability physically fit and could be assigned to some
of the service to which nurses are being assigned at the present time,
therefore if she qualifies physically I do not see why she could not be
eligible for the Special Service. I should think it would be a mistake
to issue a chevron on any other basis, because if it is issued to one, there
are many others who have given very splendid service, and we feel that the
same recognition should be given them In fact, Mrs* Foy at the Sanitarium,
Battle Creek, is one of these women. She has been a very ardent worker
in recruiting nurses for service in that section, but I feel quite sure that
Mrs. Foy would not qualify physically on account of a goitre, and then, too,
she could not go into active service because she has with her an aged and
invalid father.
I am expecting to be in Detroit on the 29th of August and have told Mrs.
Gretter that I would confer further with her regarding this matter. I am
sure Mrs. Gretter herself would not wish the chevron unless she was eligible.
Personally I feel that the issuing of the chevron should be done with a good
deal of care and not make it possible to have this a recognition for many
women who are neither eligible for service or ho may not be ready to serve
when they are really needed. In the minds of many it was thought that if a
woman was carrying responsible work in her community, the Red Cres should
give this recognition. This point of view I cannot see, as the woman was
doing this work before the war, why should she be given special recognition
for it at this time unless it is keeping her from going into active service?
We are having a committee meeting on Friday of this week and have fifty ready
to be acted upon. As per your instructions, we have forwarded your communi-
cation with blanks to the othr Division Office. There is some question in
my mind whether we have not more on these blanks than is really essential, but
I think although this may be true, it has not been bad, as it has made nurses
realize that we expect definite information concerning not only themselves,
but the institution which is making the request. It has had a good psychological
effect.
Hope it is not as warm in Washington as it is in this part of the country, but
fear that it is. This weather makes it pretty hard to carry the heavy load which
must be shouldered these days.
Yours very truly,
Director, Minic H. Albren
Bureau of Nursing Service.
