My dear Miss Hales:
This will acknowledge receipt of your two letters of June 15, one addressed
to Mr. Harriman and the other to me.
The information regarding your service in World War I, recorded in your file
here, is as follows:
Sailed from the United States September 26, 1918
the
Returned May 6, 1919
Released May 20, 1919
The record indicates that you were attached to Nospital 101
As to pensions for nurses who served under the Red Cross in World War I,
I am sorry to inform you that there is no such provision made for either
nurses or other workers who served the Red Cross so well in 1918-19.
You may know that efforts have been made over the years to have legialation
enacted that would give these workers some of the benefits comparable to
those provided by the Veterans Administration for men and women who were
militarized. As a matter of fact, such a bill was presented in the last
Congress, but I do not think it ever got out of committee. The Women's
Overseas League has been very astive in trying to get sone legislation
passed, but up to date has not succeeded.
It is to be regretted that all personned serving in World War I were not
classified as beneficiaries of the Veterans Administration, but only those
who took the oath of office and were militarized. Our records do not show
that you were militarized. If perchance you were, you of course would be
eligible for benefits from the Veterans Administration. I hope this information
may be useful to you.
