My dear Mrs. Hare:
J.
I remember your work in our disaster service in the Mississippi
Valley and was so delighted whon Mies Dunn telegraphed me that you would be interest-
ed in the vacancy we now have in the virgin Islands. I am writing at once to see
whether you will accept the positione
The Virgin Islands, as you probably know, consist of two islands,
St. Croix and St. Thomas, each about the sise of a smoll county, and two or three
little islands. The United States purchased these islands from Denmark ten or
twelve years ago, I have forgotten the date. sighty-five or ninety percent,
perhaps more, of the population consists of negroes àn the West Indian type such as
have been coming over to Harlem in large murabers in recent yoars. The rest of
the
population is American and panish, consisting of Navy officials who are in charge
of the government of the islands and large plantation ownerse The "high yellows"
among the negro population were recognized by the panes and are now by the Americans
in all official matters and in the more goneral social affairs. The white colony,
however, has its own social circle and life and because they are so much in the
minority, the white people flock together in a rathor intimate and exclusive waye
We have a Red cross chapter in the Islands, officered in the main
by white people. We also have two American nurses, one, Miss Gillette, is executive
secretary of the Chapter and carries on the nursing service in St. Thomas through
two native nurses, and the other is assistant to Miss Gillette in charge of the
mursing service on the island of St. Croix and has unier her a native nurse. The
two islands are a considerable distance apart, as you will see from the map. which
gives the nurse at St. croix a good deal of responsibility
Miss cameron has held the St. Croix position for two years and now
wants to come home, although she writes that she will leave with many regrets as she
has enjoyed the unique experience of life and work there. She is returning in
June and we viant to fill her position promptly.
The work consists of a rather elementary program of school nursing
principally, with a little of other types of public health nursing and with
considerable social work which is also of a rather elemontary character. The Navy,
through its medical and nursing corps, also does a limited amount of follow-up
work among the homos.
