I at COPY My dear Miss Noyes: S The news of Miss Hay's death pained me more than it sur- C prised me. Her last letter to me, seven or eight months ago, was a long C yearning, a cry of despairt She seemed to be tired of the life of an invalid, active as she was, after having spent her life in service to others, giving herself with inimitable self-denial with the same humility and sweetness which distinguished her. No will was stronger when she wanted to achieve some work; no system was better when she had to organize something. She remained in this respect unsurpassable. She taught us the way to work and set for us the example of good and profitable work. She was severe for others, but still more severe for herself. Miss Hay can set a sitandard for the real nurse in its most real meaning. Unfortunately, she gave herself too much, and went too soon. For us she is not dead, and her deeds here in Sofia, and dear Flodiv will live and as a monument point to the future generations the life of a real nurse like Miss Hay. We had a perfectly nice and inspiring Memorial Service in her honor last Sunday. You may read of it in your papers, if Mr. Schoe- maker is obliging enough to give it place in the American press. The ladies' committee created a fund "Miss Hay" by the Nurses' School for specializing of nurses, and I am sure it will soon mean something. I don't think we can do enough to give material expression to our gratitude to Miss Hay, poor dear Miss Hay! In closing W letter, dear Miss Noyes, I beg to express to you particularly my sympathy for the great loss of a nurse like Miss Hay. Wishing you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, I am Most sincerely yours (sgd) Ganke Calschoff Harisanoff Sofia, Dec. 17, 1932. 2 20F
