DATA REGARDING MISS HELEN SCOTT HAY

Graduate of the Northwestern Academy, 1889; B. L. of Northwestern University,
1893; three terms at University of Chicago, 1900; graduate of the Illinois
Training School for Nurses, Chicago, 1895; Head Nurse Iowa State Hospital
for the Insane, 1895-1896; chief nurse of private sanatorium, Los Angeles,
Calif; private duty nursing Los Angeles; principal of High School, Savanna,
Ill. 1901-1902; private duty nursing, Chicago, 1902-1904; Superintendent of
Nurses County Institutions, Dunning, Ill. 1904; private duty nursing,
Pasadena, Calif. 1906; Superintendent of Pasadena Hospital, 1906-1911;
Superintendent of the Illinois Training School for Nurses, 1911-1914; went
overseas in charge of the Red Cross nurses on the Red Cross Ship, September
1914; Chief Nurse of Unit "C", Kief, Russia, 1914.
Before the declaration of war, preparations had been made for the establish-
ment of a training school for nurses, conducted under the American Standards
in Bulgaria, under the patronage of Queen Eleanora. Miss Hay had been re-
quested to undertake the organization of this school. The war necessitated
the postponement of these plans and Miss Hay went from Russia to Bulgaria,
where she was engaged in Public Health nursing and Relief work at Philippopolis;
returned to the United States in May 1917 to receive appointment as Director
of Bureau of Instruction, Department of Nursing, National Headquarters,
American Red Cross. Released by the Red Cross in June 1918 to help organize
the Army School of Nursing of the Surgeon General's office, War Department.
Appointed October 1918 as Chief Nurse of the Red Cross Commission to the Balkan
states; appointed Chief Nurse of the Red Cross Commission to Europe in May
1919. Released May 1922.
Decorated by the Russian Government with the Gold Cross of St. Anne; by the
Queen of Bulgaria with the Bulgarian Royal Red Cross in recognition of
"splendid service done in the fulfillment of her profession".
Received the Florence Nightingale Medal, International Red Cross Commission,
Geneva, Switzerland.
Miss Helen Scott Hay was born in 1869 at Lanark, Illinois and died November 25,
1932, after an illness of seven years, at her home in Savanna, Illinois.
