- I - RUP:LS en December 30, 1932. C 0 My dear Miss Noyes: + I am pleased to write my recollections of Mis/s Helen Scott Hay during the time we were associated in 1914. At that time I was a Major in the Medical Corps of the Army assigned as Chief of the Bureau of Medical Service of the American Red Cross. The International and War Relief Boards of the American Red Cross had decided to charter a ship to carry trained personnel and hospital supplies to the belligerent nations involved in the World War, all of whom accepted this offer of assistance. No American ship was available but two ships were offered free of charge and the "Hamburg" of the Hamburg-American Line was selected. Her name was changed to the "Red Cross" though at the time she was often spoken of as the "Mercy Ship". These organizations were known as "Hospital Units". It wes my duty to select the American surgeons and furnish the medical supplies composing this first European relief expedition, and my good friend, the late Miss Jane Delano, chose the nurses. I distinctly recall the efficiency with which Miss Hay impressed us all from the moment of her appointment as Supervising Nurse of the group on the journey to England. Miss Hay previously had been appointed at the request of Queen Eleonoré to establish a training school in Bulgaria but her scheduled departure on August 4th was delayed by the outbreak of the war. The relief expedition was therefore fortunate in securing her to take charge of the nursing detachment on the trip overseas. Her experience as an executive and leader and her high standards, made themselves apparent from the very first. Her energy and unfailing optimism spread to all about her and both the medical and the nursing staffs felt the fullest confidence in her ability to meet and solve problems as they arose. From England she proceeded to Russia with the Hospital Units sent to that country. Her physical endurance was taxed to the utmost before her tasks with the expedition were finished but she met every test with the quiet firmness, tact and dignity that one would expect from her fine character and past experience. The subsequent series of difficult positions to which her duties called her and the success with which she filled them could have been predicted by any of us who were associated with her on the S. 6. "Red Cross". Sincerely, Rob't. U. Patterson, Miss Clara D. Noyes, Major General, National Director, The Surgeon General. Red Cross Nursing Service, American Red Cross, Washington,D.c 2 A 2018 2
