Very confidential.
Miss Helen Scott Hay, Director,
A.R.C Nursing Service in Europe,
4 Rue de Chevreuse, Paris, France.
My dear Miss Hay:-
Enclosed is a copy of my letter to Dr. Burnhem on the
Subject of the Saboniki work, and confirmation of a telegram which I sent
to botn of you on Oct. lothe
It has been very difficult for me to write this report
Miss Hay, because ay mind has been so much disturbed about the matter and I
have been afraid that I might say too mich. I wish that it were possible to
talk to you instead of writing.
You may wonder why I do not recommend further connection
with the Infant Welfare work in Saloniki, when you read my letter to Dr. Burnham.
It is because, in the first place, I an deeply interested
in the Greek people thenselves, and want to confine my efforts while I am in
Greece to teaching and helping then. As far as the management of the work
goes, there are no real Greek people in it in Saloniki. (So Miss Spelman tells
mo.) Mrs.Hadji+Lazaro says that the "Greeks do not know now to work, and that
what they do, they do badly. She is president of the Saloniki branch of the
Patriotic Loague (the queen's own organization, and Chairman of the Infant
Welfare Committee. She does not appoint then on her Committees; so they do not
have an opportunity to do things. In Saloniki practically all the money for
such purposes is in the hands of the Patriotic League.
I do not discount the ability of the German people, and would
not exclude anyone from the work wno wants to nelp, but I would certainly
prefer to have had a small beginning in Infant Welfare work, such as the
Greek people could have supported, witn entirely Greek Committees and workers,
and let it grow slowly out of that.
The greek people here in Athens have demonstrated that they
do vant to work and learn, and they are quite willing to do so if given a fair
chance.
I do not tnink it is a good thing for the poor people of
any country to think that tneir neods are being cared for by the people of
another nationality, unless the other nation is also furnishing the money,
as in the case of the Amorican Bed Cross. This às a very complicated subjest
which is difficult to make clear by letter.
