I - a T D January 27, 1949 Mrs. E. R. Harding 1236 Martine Avenue Plainfield, New Jersey My dear Mrs. Harding: We greatly appreciate your thoughtfulness in writing us on January 16 regarding the Red Cross nurse's badge issued to your aunt, Miss Alicia Hibbard. According to correspondence in file it wauld appear that the matter was straightened out satiefactor§ is your aunt. We are very sorry indeed to learn of her Inness necessitating placement in a nursing home but do hop that sãe is comfortably situated. According to records on file, your aunt served overseas in World War I from August 26, 1918, to February 2, 1919 but was not militarized therefore is not a beneficiary of the Veterans Administration. Only those nurses who took the obth of office with the Army or Navy and thus became militarized are aligible For benefits under the Veterans Adminis- tration. I am sorry there is no pension fund available in the Red Cross organization for personnel who served in World War I. I do not happen to know what if any provision was made on a state basis for citizens who served with the arned forces in World War I. It might be workhmille to make an investigation of State funds through either Red Cross chapter or the American Legion. the With your best Aocal ishes, I am Cordially yours, Ruth B.
