BICKNELL, VICE-CHAIRMAN\nSAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA\nROLL CALL RED CROSS NURSES DEFENSE TEST August 4, 1924.\nDear Red Cross Nurse:\nOn the 12th of September, 1924, on behalf of the War\nDepartment the Surgeon General of the United States Army, has asked the Red\nCross to call the Roll of our Red Cross Nurses, as part of the Defense Test\nof all organized military groups, as well as the citizens of this country.\nThis is the first practical test of the peace time working of the National\nDefense Act. It does not mean active service, it does not mean giving up\nyour work, but it does mean that you are expected to report to the Commit-\ntees under which you are enrolled, or to such other headquarters as may\nlater be designated either in person, by letter, telephone or telegram.\nNo nurse need be put to any expense, beyond a two-cent stamp or a telephone\ncall, or if she has been particularly tardy, she may need to pay for a\ntelegram.\nRegardless of age, occupation, or present physical con-\ndition, you are expected to answer the Roll Call on that day exactly as if\nyou 'were called into active service. Each nurse enrolled in our service\nappreciates that its primary purpose is a reserve to the Army and Navy\nNurse Corps, and therefore should be prepared to answer a call of this sort\nwhenever it may come. It does not mean war, but it does mean preparedness\nand efficiency. If our enrollment stands for this, do not let your failure\nto answer the Roll Call not later than the morning of the 12th of September,\npreferably a few days before, bring criticism upon the whole service, as\nnot measuring up to the purpose for which it is organized.\nPlease pass this word on to your sister nurses, watch\nthe public press, the nursing journals and the Red Cross Courier for\ngeneral information, and whatever you do keep constantly before you\nin\nsome conspicuous place the words Report September 12th. \"HERE\"!!\nVery truly yours,\nClara Duoyes\nChairman, National Commi tt ee,\nN-K\nanna B.
