Miss Marie Johnson,
22022
R 4, Box g6,
Westby, Wis.
My dear Miss Johnson:
Your letter has been received and I am sending with this a cir-
cular concerning the U. S. Public Health Service. The hospitals under
the direction of this Service include Marine Hospitals, and care for general
diseases, including venereal and tuberculosis cases.
We are requesting the War Department to return to us your Red
Cross application papers which were sent there when you went on duty with the
Army. This is necessary before you can be considered for further service and
will take from ten to fifteen days. The Army efficiency reports will govern
largely our selection of nurses for this service. As your criginal physical
examination will be retained in the War Department, please have the enclosed
blank filled out by your physician and return it to us.
After your papers have been returned from the War Department we
shall be glad to submit them to the Surgeon General of the U.S. Public Health
Service, but in view of the fact that there may not ve a vacancy immediately,
may I urge that you do not discontime any work you may take up, nor make def-
inite preparations until you are notified. We would, however, need to know
the approximate date upon which you could ve available before submitting your
papers to the Surgeon General's office.
Although consideration is always given the location of assignment
requested by the nurse, should there be no vacancy and her services be needed
elsewhere, she would be expected to respond. The U. s. Public Health-Service
is not willing to transport nurses to great distances. After accepting assign-
ment, nurses are expected to remain at least six months.
Appreciating your interest, believe me as
Very truly yours,
Director, Department of Nursing.
P.S. In view of the fact that there are a number of nurses available forser-
vice, we can not definitely promise assignment can be secured on the date
given byo you as available, Oct. lst, and woul d urge that you do not make
defini te proparations untia notified. It will not be-possible to request
2
appointment for you in California on account of the distance.
