Extract from a letter to Miss Clara D. Noyes, from Miss Josephine S.
Jokaitis, Gary, Indiana, dated October 10th, 1921.
"I wonder if there are other workers needed in Poland besides
graduate nurses. I ask on account of a friend - Miss Casimire Szymonska,
who is with me at present and who has been previously in the A.R.C.
service in Poland for nineteen months. I think if you should wish to
look up her record you will find it was excellent.
Miss Szymonska is Polish; she speaks, reads and writes Polish,
French and Russian fluently. She also speaks, reads and writes English.
She has had three years of medicine at the University of Parit, her
studies were interrupted by the war. She came to America, and later
prepared herself fortthe war service, having taken the short courses
York
in Nursing, both at the No and the St. Vincents Hospital.
While in Poland with the A.R.C. at the time when we all found
it necessary to do a number of things, she had nursed at the hospital,
had charger of the dispensary in Unit IV, worked in the canteen, also
did home visiting in the villages of eastern Poland, giving relief, etc.
Later she was housekeeper at the headquarters in Warsaw. She has ex-
ecutive and initiative ability and her work in every instance was satis-
factory.
She had returned at the same time I did and hoped to complete
her medical studies here, but found later that her finances would not
permit at the time. She is at present doing home nursing for **
Metropolitan Life Insurance here, under my supervision an
satisfaction. She would, however, if there is an
future, like to work in Poland with the A.R.C.
