The accident happening with startling suddenness, drew a great crowd from Chinatown and the Kearny street district, but because of the heavy mist few people were eyewitnesses. Gripman Joseph Bygle had stopped his car at Grant avenue and about to release his brakes steep was when descending Stockton and the another car, hill between Grant avenue, crashed into it. The impact was such that car windows were broken. The crash, which could be heard for blocks, emptied nearby hotels, the tenants and sightseers emerging in time to see two interlocked cable cars race dawn the California-street hill from Grant avenue toward Kearny street. Passengers Jump From Runaway Cars As the runaway cars sped down the hill passengers on both became panic-stricken and fought to gain position from which to jump into approached the a street. interlocked a third cars As the Kearny street cable car, looming ahead, caused Gripman Bygle and Mrs. Keil to jump. Impact of Collision Disabies Brakes "The collision occurred so sud- denly that I did not have an oppor- tunity to realize what was happen- ing," Gripman Bygle said at the hospital last night. "My car, with locked brakes, was standing at Grant avenue when the other car crashed into our rear. The force of the collision was such that my brakes were put out of commission. The two cars then piled down the hill toward Kearny street. When I saw another car ahead of us and re- alized that a second collision was inevitable. I decided to jump and I did. Mrs. Keil jumped, too, but I did not see her as she did so." Gripman Leo Hunter, in charge of the cable car which rammed that of Gripman Bygle, told the police last night that wet rails caused him to lose control and before he was able to do anything his car crashed into Bygle's car.
