The accident happening with
startling suddenness, drew a great
crowd from Chinatown and the
Kearny street district, but because
of the heavy mist few people were
eyewitnesses.
Gripman Joseph Bygle had
stopped his car at Grant avenue and
about to release his brakes
steep was when descending Stockton and the
another car,
hill between
Grant avenue, crashed into it.
The impact was such that car
windows were broken. The crash,
which could be heard for blocks,
emptied nearby hotels, the tenants
and sightseers emerging in time to
see two interlocked cable cars race
dawn the California-street hill from
Grant avenue toward Kearny street.
Passengers Jump

As the
Kearny street
cable car, looming ahead, caused
Gripman Bygle and Mrs. Keil to
jump. The two runaway cars
crashed into the car ahead of them
but came to a stop within a block.
In jumping from the car Mrs. Keil
sustained a fractured skull and
Gripman Bygle's right elbow was
dislocated. When the runaway cars
were brought to a stop police am-
bulances were summoned to carry
the injured passengers to the Cen-
tral Emergency Hospital.
Impact of Collision
Disabies Brakes
"The collision occurred so sud-
denly that I did not have an oppor-
tunity to realize what was happen-
ing," Gripman Bygle said at the
hospital last night. "My car, with
locked brakes, was standing at
Grant avenue when the other car
crashed into our rear. The force of
the collision was such that my
brakes were put out of commission.
The two cars then piled down the
hill toward Kearny street. When I
saw another car ahead of us and re-
alized that a second collision was
inevitable. I decided to jump and I
did. Mrs. Keil jumped, too, but I
did not see her as she did so."
Gripman Leo Hunter, in charge
of the cable car which rammed that
of Gripman Bygle, told the police
last night that wet rails caused him
to lose control and before he was
able to do anything his car crashed
into Bygle's car. The partly tele-
scoped cars then sped down the
