My dear Miss Kloman:
June 15th
We have you scheduled to sail about
We can only give you
you an approximate date, but Dr. Babcock of the Division of Transportation will
send you definite instructions concerning this and all other business matters,
and may I request that you do not leave your home until you have received and
executed his instructions. This is essential if you are to secure your pass-
port.
I am enclosing a circular of information which gives you detailed in-
structions concerning material for your passport. I would suggest that you
secure immediately the information necessary and I would further suggest that
you have three (3) dozen photographs made instead of the two (2) dozen mention-
ed in the circular, and that the size of the head should not be more than 1 by
1 inches in order to fit some of the papers, and that no hat should be worn.
These photographs should cost not more than 50 cents t6 one dollar a dozen and
should be gotten as reasonably as possible. In the cities where there is fre-
quent request for passports, the regulation photographs can be obtained for a-
bout this price. In the case of nurses, not citizens of the U. S. it will be
necessary to make application for passport to the Consul representing their
country.
The term of service is for the period of the war, but nurses may be re-
leased at the expiration of one year, if the reasons for their request for re-
lease meet with the approval of the authorities. Nurses sent over under the
Red Cross are expected to remain in this service and requests for transfer to
the military service will not be considered.
We request that you pay your own transportation to New York securing
vouchers for all expenditures and presenting these with your bills at the New
York Office for reimbursement. You are allowed hotel. bill for three (3) days
prior to the date on which you are booked to sail at $4.00 a day, and for any
time you may be held in New York after that date. As the ships rarely sail on
the designated date, you will probably have from three to six days extra in New
York, thus having full time for any preparation it is necessary to make.
You are allowed salary at two ($2.00) dollars a day from date of leav-
ing home to date on which booked to sail. If you are held in New York af ter
that time the additional salary will be paid in France.
The salary is $60.00 a month and you may make any callotment you desire
of this salary before leaving this country. After sailing however, there can
4
be no change made in the method of payment of salaries. Forms for this pur-
pose will be sent you later from Dr. Babcock's office.
