Subject: Eligibility - World War I
Nurses for Disability
Benefits
We have been asked by our Home Service Department whether or
not Red Cross nurses who served during World War I are eligible for
disability benefits. One of our chapters has inquired about our policy
in this respect. The nurse in question is Agnes Pickett Kloman who
maintains that her present serious arthritic condition was due to
rheumatism for which she was treated while in the serviée. She enlisted
June 15, 1916 and was discharged in January 1919. Her hospital care
occurred shortly before her discharge and she has a record of dates and
places of the care.
It is our understending that Red Cross nurses were taken into
the Army prior to the end of World War I and thus, it would seem to us
that she would be entitled to any veteran benefits provided by law.
