    "ocrText": "AIR MAIL\nJanuary 8, 1942\nMiss Winifred M.\nAlpena\n608 LaLonde chickolan\nMichigan\nMy dear Miss LaLonde:\nThank you very much for advising us you would like to serve with\nthe Army or Navy. According to your records you have just passed the age\nlimit for this Service, but it occurred to us you might be interested in\nserving with the American Red Cross in related types of service. At the\npresent time we are preparing to send a group of nurses to Hawaii to care\nfor the civilian population injured during the recent attack on the Islands.\nThis group of nurses is being assembled in our Pacific Area Office and if\nyou are interested will you please complete the enclosed application Form 1219,\nsending it to Miss Gladyce Badger, Director of Public Health Nursing, Pacific\nArea office, American Red Cross, Civic Auditorium, San Francisco, California.\nThe Service which we are planning there will probably be, for the most part,\nin Hospitals, and the nurses who accept appointments must agree to stay as\nlong as needed. A physical examination is required and we are enclosing the\nform in the event Miss Badger should wire you and you should be interested.\nWe suggest that you wait until you hear from her before having your physical\nexamination, however, as she is the person who makes the final appointment.\nIt is just possible that she may have obtained the necessary number of nurses be\nbefore she received your name. In that event we should like to keep your name\non file for any similar service that we may be called upon to give.\nThe Red Cross is prepared to pay for the physical examination, not\nto exceed $5.00. A statement should appear on the bill indicating the Red Cross\nService for which the nurse(is applying and the bill should be submitted to\nMiss Badger. This should not be done, however, until you hear from her.\nImmunisation is required (At least the first doee before leaving; all if time\npermits. Typhoid and smallpox within one year; tetanus toxoid-record on physical\nexamination form 1193. eeth-nurses are reminded that facilities for dental\ncare will be limited, and teeth, therefore, should be in good condition.\nAll personnel assigned by the Red Cross will be included in the Life,\nHealth and Accident Provision arranged by the Red Cross-details of this coverage\nwill be given you if you receive an assignment.\nIn the event you do not hear from Miss Badger we should like to keep\nyour name on record as there is a possibility that we may need nurses again and\nmight wish to call upon nurses from the midwestern area.\nSincerely yours\nMary Beard\nDirector of Nursing Service\ncc to Miss Badger\nMidwestern Area\nEBG:ew"
