Donna Pearce, Assoc. Public Health Nursing, State Dept. of Health,
Nashville, Tennessee - May 9, 1934
11 Miss Ruth Laxton was employed as field nurse in the Division
of Tuberculosis Control, Tennessee Department of Public Health,
from June 13, 1928 to May 1933. I had no direct contact with Miss
Laxton during this period of service, however, the efficiency report
as made out by the supervising nurse, Tuberculosis Control, gives a
rating of good on every item. This report states further that al-
though Miss Laxton has shown herself to be ambitious and hard work-
ing. She was granted study leave from October 1931 to June 1932.
Then when the Tuberculosis Control Division was abolished May 1933,
Miss Laxton re-entered Peabody College and is now a candidate for
the Bachelor of Science degree this spring. Miss Laxton tells me
that she is especially interested in school nursing or in teaching
health in a teacher's college, but since she feels that she needs
experience in the generalized health field to serve as a foundation
for her teaching or school work, she has accepted a position as
county nurse in one of our rural counties beginning May 15, 1934.
I shall be very glad to give you a more detailed report when we have
had a chance to observe her in this generalized service."
Frances F. Hagar, Acting Director, State Dept. of Health, Nashville,
Tennessee - July 8, 1936
"Miss Ruth Laxton served a.s tuberculosis field nurse in unorgan-
ized counties in Tennessee for almost five years (with about eight
months! study leave during this time) and proved entirely satis-
factor in this capacity. She served as a county nurse in a general-
ized nursing program from May 1934 to September 1935. Miss Laxton's
credentials are good. Her records show her to be a fine young person.
The only criticism anywhere has been an occasional abruptness while
working with school children and an over-sensitiveness when working
with people. This is displayed in botheher social and professional
life. Although Miss Laxton is slightly lame due to poliolyelitis,
this has not in any way handicapped her ability to work. She has
carried a full load in each instance and has stood up well physically
under it. Miss Laxton's report shows that she improved in her work
under supervision, did an excellent job in record work, and used
satisfactory nursing procedures. She manifested a special interest
in health education and seemed eager to learn and improve."
L. c. Fisher, State Advisory Nurse, West Virginia State Dept. of
Health - Aug. 13, 1936
"Miss Ruth Laxton tendered her resignation to this department
effective August 1, 1936. She is well trained in the field of public
health nursing and is extremely energetic in her work."
Eugenia L. Klinefetter, Asst. to Director, Public Health Nursing
American Red Cross National Headquarters, Washington D. C. - July27,
1938

of culture and refinement. She was liked in the community; shows
