Miee Dorothy Ledyard
Assietant Director, Nursing Service
Pacific Branch Office, American Red Croes
Grove and Larkin Streets
San Francieco, Calif
My dear Dise Ledyard
Your letter of June 16th has juet
been received. I agres with you - that the appointment
of your successor has dragged along entirely too long.
lie all agreed some monthe ago upon
Miee Matilds Harris as the most desirable person to
succeed you. In the first plice ehe has had 8, long Red
Cross experience, not only in the sastern territory, but
in the southwest, New Mexico and Arizona. She is par-
ticularly well versed in Home Hygiene, which is a growing
activity in this section. She took the course at Pena-
sylvania State Gollege last summer, and has eince that
time developed this activity in new York State in a very
splendid manner.
Re had hoped that Nr Hunt would be
coming east 80 that a conference could be arranged between
the two. when he came, however, he was 80 miserable and
had his mind EO thoroughly set upon securing Miss Havey
that he did not appear to want to takk about anyone else.
I am not surprieed he was suffering very greatly indeed.
Yesterdey we felt that something
definite must be done, consequently in a conference with
Ar Fieser, Miss Fox, Mrs Baker, myeelf and Mr Gwin, we
decided to act for the Division and ask Misa Harris to
accept the appointment.
Shortly before thie Mr Arners telegram
to Mr Fieser recommending Miss Catherine Bastin had been
received. While me have no doubt that Mise Baetin is an
excellent woman, her lack of experience as an edministrative
officer for a Branch Office did not appeer to justify us
in approving her appointment. It also seemed to us much
wiser when we had fine peoplé in the field who had had
years of experience in Red Cross work, not to give them
