COPY ST. CROIX CHAPTER ST. CROIX, VIRGIN ISLANDS P.O. Box 74 August 8, 1946 Miss Olivia T. Peterson Director, Home Nursing American Red Cross National Headquarters Washington, D. C. Dear Miss Peterson: I am delighted to know that Unit II will soon be ready for use. I don't know how many people will be interested in taking the course here, but I know that a very large number should be and I will try and create interest for the course. I am starting another class in Unit I next week. This time I am teaching a class in Frederiksted. I have a class room set up on the first floor at the Lutheran par- sonage. It makes an ideal class room, since we have both a kitchen and a bath room. It seems easier to teach home nursing in a home situation. I haven't received the certificates or report forms to date, but our mail is very slow in coming. We are supposed to get regular mail once a week via Puerto Rico, but if the boat has extra cargo the mail is left behind, for example we didn't get our second class mail at all last week. It may come this week and it may not. A regular mail letter is often six weeks in coming. Our new Govenor is anxious to establish one training school for nurses here in the Virgin Islands. He wrote me for advice on this matter and I suggested that he get in touch with the Nursing Division of the U.S.P.H.S. and get assistance from them. It will take careful study of the whole nursing and hospital situation here to be able to give the advice necessary on such a matter. I think that the U.S.P.H.S. will have well trained nurses who can give the governor much better service than I would be able to give. The "governing board" of the Graduate Nurses Association of St. Croix had a con- ference with the governor one evening this week and at that time they begged the governor to get a director of nurses for their hospitals here in St. Croix and to establish a training school for nurses. He took that opportunity to discuss with them the idea of one training school for all the Virgin Islands. They were agreeable with his thinking on the matter. He assured them that he was working for the im- provement of nursing service for the people here as well as for more monetary compensa- tion for the nurses. I thought you would be interested in the above information, since the U.S.P.H.S. people were coming over to your office to talk with you about my work here. I shall be glad to have the opportunity to take care of the certificates here and will send you a report of each class. I appreciated your letter. Sincerely yours, /s/ Nan Cox Hare Nan Cox Hare Nursing Field Representative
