fale April 16, 1946 gill REPORT OF CONVERSATION WITH MISS LUCILLE PETRY, NURSING EDUCATION DIVISION OF UNITED STATES PUBLIC HEALTH SERVICE Misa Petry reported that they have had no request for assistance in the nursing education field from the Philippine islands. They cannot send personnel without specific requests to do so. She is very much interested in the problems over there and feels that the Health Service would be interested in helping should a need really be proven. I explained to her our report of evidence of need as given to us by Miss Virginia Jones in December 1945, at which time Miss Jones suggested the possibility that the Rockefeller Foundation might be encouraged to send some assistance over there. Miss Petry indicated that while Major McKinnan was on duty with the Army Nurse Corps in the Philippines, she worked slightly with the Philippine nurses and seemed to feel that they would, in all probability, be able to work out there own nursing education problems. What they more urgently seemed to need was nursing education tutelage in the line of textbooks, magasines, etc. Miss Petry wondered if it would be possible for us to get a more recent report of the present situation and suggested that we provide her with copies of whatever report was received as it would undoubtedly be very helpful in enabling them to plan a program if one was indicated. I asked her if she thought Katharine Amberson might be suitable for an assignment over there should a need be proven, and she seemed to feel that she would be an excellent selection. Gertrude 8.
