As I am no good, physically, in a very hot climate, and
had signed up for Public Health, not Hospital, and also
was some ten years over the age-limit which they had
stated would not be waived for tropical service, I
wrote back that I could not apply. There has been
no further indication that I might fit in Somewhere
in this country, where I'm sure nurses are needed for
newly crowded areas. Now I've passed my forty-fifth
birthday in August, so suppose that is another mark
against me.
My application blanks for the Red Cross position
are probably on file with you, and would give you a
better idea of my professional and educational work,
than to list it here. Will just say that since gradu
ation from the Rhode Island Hospital Training School
in 1923,I ve had
4 years "ith the Smithfield Public Health League--
as staff-nurse--combining - rural district,
school, and industrial nursing (first-aid &
nursing service to five mills daily)
2 years- Private duty, mostly for pediatricians.
2 years- "ith, Burrillville District Nursing Ass' n, as
head-nurse. Rural district with large Matern
ity Pervice.
6 months- Brown University Infirmary, as assistant
nurse. Institutional.
4
nths--Private duty Pediatrics & general.
2
months--Camp Nurse- - R. I. Girl-Scout Camp.
11 yrs Barrington District Nursing Asson- taff-
nurse--suburban district nursing, 24 hr.ser-
vice, living at Centre. Do all bedside nursir
and assist with school-nursing program as
needed by my head-nurse.
The only Hospital nursing I've done since graduation
has been during intervals of private-duty nursing, and
on alternate Sundays in the past three months, when I
volunteered 8 hours floor-duty at the ".I. Hospital to
help out.
In nineteen years of active nursing,I have lost
very little time for illness. My health is good, and
altho I've enjoyed my bedside nursing to the exclusion
of learning special techniques, I've studied faithfully
and as fast as I was financially able, to better my
educational standards. It is most discouraging to
find oneself too young for one war, and too old for the
next, and yet feel capable of serving as long and as
well as a younger persone So,Miss Dunbar, if you
could find a place for me in your plan, and let me giv
my share of work, I would be very happy.
Thanking you for your attention in this matter,
and trusting you will call me soon, I am
Respectfully yours,
