Miss Madley, and the Nursing Staff of the Harvard Unit:
April 8, 1942
-2-
And by the way, I suppose some members of the staff are h ving the
American Journal of Nursing sent to them so that you are able to keep up
with that source of nursing news. If you are following the American Journal
of Nursing and Public Health Nursing you are seeing that our program in Red
Cross Home Nursing is a very busy one. We set for ourselves a goal of 500,000
individuals to receive the course in 1942, and for this we calculated we would
need about 15,000 nurses to teach ne or more classes. To date we have already
authorized 17,000 nurses as instructors. In a recent 10 day period in the
Eastern Area office more authorisation ns were issued than in the entire previous
fiscal year! (Last year 2,500 nurses se ved as instructors and 31,000 individ-
uals completed the course.)
I am attaching a summary of our Nursing Service activities for the month
of March. You will be glad to know, I am sure, that the 39 nurses who sailed
for Hawaii on March 29, have landed, and at this moment we are waiting for a
telephone call fr m Hawaii, (isn't it six thousand miles?), to get our first
report of how they are to be assigned to the civilian hospitals.
We all enjoy the letters, which come frim the nurses of the Unit and want
to know all of the things which are going on.
Mary Beard
Director, Nursing Service
Miss Gertrude Madley, Chief Nurse,
American Red Cross-Harvard Field Hospital Unit,
Salisbury,
