    "ocrText": "Miss Madley, and the Nursing Staff of the Harvard Unit:\nApril 8, 1942\n-2-\nAnd by the way, I suppose some members of the staff are h ving the\nAmerican Journal of Nursing sent to them so that you are able to keep up\nwith that source of nursing news. If you are following the American Journal\nof Nursing and Public Health Nursing you are seeing that our program in Red\nCross Home Nursing is a very busy one. We set for ourselves a goal of 500,000\nindividuals to receive the course in 1942, and for this we calculated we would\nneed about 15,000 nurses to teach ne or more classes. To date we have already\nauthorized 17,000 nurses as instructors. In a recent 10 day period in the\nEastern Area office more authorisation ns were issued than in the entire previous\nfiscal year! (Last year 2,500 nurses se ved as instructors and 31,000 individ-\nuals completed the course.)\nI am attaching a summary of our Nursing Service activities for the month\nof March. You will be glad to know, I am sure, that the 39 nurses who sailed\nfor Hawaii on March 29, have landed, and at this moment we are waiting for a\ntelephone call fr m Hawaii, (isn't it six thousand miles?), to get our first\nreport of how they are to be assigned to the civilian hospitals.\nWe all enjoy the letters, which come frim the nurses of the Unit and want\nto know all of the things which are going on.\nMary Beard\nDirector, Nursing Service\nMiss Gertrude Madley, Chief Nurse,\nAmerican Red Cross-Harvard Field Hospital Unit,\nSalisbury,\nEngland.\nfr\nEnclosures"
