AMERICAN RED CROSS-HARVARD FIELD HOSPITAL UNIT
JOHN E. GORDON, M.D., DIRECTOR
February 23rd., 1942
SALISBURY, ENGLAND
Miss Virginia Dunbar
Assistant Director Nursing Service,
American Red Cross National Headquarters
Washington D.C.
U.S.A.
Dear Miss Dunbar:
We have waited so long for Doctor Gordon's return; he
must be very disturbed at not being able to get back. Most of us
have our top coats now and they are a great joy. We found some
good cloth and we have a red lining similar to our capes. They
cost a little over $40.
Our buttons and pins have not arrived yet. The capes,
caps, shirt blouses and emblems marked Harvard Unit came this
week. (I am sorry to say I did not know that Miss Sundby's cape
was lost too; you remember she only lost part of her baggage, so
hers was not included in the seventeen.) Unitl we know definitely
that we will be expected to stay another year, I will do nothing
about a second suit for the hospital staff, because those who
do not wish to stay, naturally will not need one. Also storm
caps, I have done nothing about, because winter is almost over
now and I would prefer the design be decided upon there if we
should need them for next winter. I do think it is very probable
though, that nurses who stay on will need another hat.
Will you let me know when the first year started from
for the nurses. Will it be their date of sailing! As soon as I
have some definite information I will let you know how many
replacements will be needed.
You do know don't you that we have a number of nurses
with Public Health experience attached to the hospital staff.
In my letter of December 29th., I asked if the cut out
pins on a white back-ground may be used. So far we have used
only those on a gold background. Mr. Drowne sent over a
sufficient number of service pins, but I have not given them out
because I don't know where they should be worn unless it be in
