Miss Gertrude Madley
Chief Nurse,
American Red Cross Harvard
Field Hospital Unit,
Salisbury, England.
My dear Miss Madley:
It has been almost two weeks since Miss ulson left the Red Cross.
Everyone here is most interested in her welfare and to date we have
heard nothing of her whereabouts.
I am enclosing some information on this last group of nurses that
you probably will want for your Little black book. Also I am sending
a copy of Secretary of State Knox's letter to Mr. Norman Davis commending
the assistance which was rendered to the Marines by our nurses on board the
S.S. Maasdam. We thought they might like to see a copy of this letter which
has been sent to each of the nurses parents.
We were very delighted to receive your cable regarding Dr. Gordon's
approval of your sister. Believe me things were really moving at a great
rate of speed immediately following receipt of that cable until the group
sailed which was only a few days. It was a very exciting and interesting
few days I can assure you. The last group of ten replacements had very
short notice themselves, about two weeks at the most, I believe, which is
comparison to the time some of those who applied the last of last year and
the first of this year had had before sailing, was indeed very short.
Miss Olson's group is bringing along the packages from the parents of
the nurses who have requested additional articles in Miss Phillips' letter
that Mr. Jacques brought along. Poor Miss Olson looked like a truck horse
when she left here. Each day for about a week before she left she would
discover something additional that had to be taken along for somebody and
I just don't know how she managed. Miss Williams from here took the same
train for Boston so maybe she was able to help Miss Olson.
Miss Dunbar has authorized the payment of $100. a month for Miss
Frances Madley to begin with. We will await further instructions after
assignment.
Most everyone here has had some part of her vacation if not all. I
am now waiting for Mrs. Heley to return in another two weeks so I will be
able to take mine. That will put it about the middle or last of September.
I could do with some time right now, I'm sure. We did have this past
Saturday prior to Labor Day and Labor Day off which made a nice week-end
