July 8, 1941 AIR-MAIL Miss Gertrude Madley, American Red Cross Headquarters, Brettenham House, Lancaster Place, W.C. 2, London, England. My dear Miss Madley: We were 30 very happy to get yours and Miss Phillips interesting letters. It helped to have news during these anxious times. It is good that the nurses from the torpedoed ship are there with you now, Their broadcast came over very well and the reports in the paper have been good. Oh; I've been so proud of the spirit they have had. The nice picture of the four of you looking at Big Ben was in the New York Times Hezald. Things are going along all right for our nurses over here. We have appointed the remaining ten who will sail with me, and are having no difficulty so far with final arrangements. We should be all ready by the middle of August. The last to be appointed include Lillian Tifft, graduate of Hartford Hospital. She has recently been working in a very isolated district in Alaska. We also appointed Ruth Berndt, graduate of Ancker Hospital, St. Paul. Anne Baroniak cancelled out because of family objections. The response to our letters to the young new enrollees isn't very good. Work with the Harvard Unit is sleeking, so today I've started taking back some of the work given Miss M. Peterson. Miss Puby Freer was appointed to the reserve Public Health staff June 3. As yet we have not received the physical examination blanks from her. We asked her to have a physical examination now by her own physician and Be will hold up the final physical examination until she is needed. Smith-Gray has kept the measurements for all the nurses so We will be able to make replacements that are necessary as soon as you inform us what is needed. I will bring over an extra supply of hose. Is there anything else that you feel we should bring? I'll appreciate your buying some of the bulky material for me.
