COPY February 24, 1943 Miss Gertrude Madley Herman Kiefer Hospital Detroit, Mich. Dear Miss Madley: Received your welcome letter this week. I'm passing it on to the other girls. There are still 23 of the old unit here - right now Miss Mallo and Miss Goik are on detached service and there are 2 nurses from another unit replacing them. Miss Voas gets married a week from this next Saturday (March 6) and will then live in Bath. We think she is going to have a very pretty wedding. I haven't seen Miss Olson for a very long time but we see Mrs. Broughton quite often. The hospital varies from 65 - 95 patients. You can imagine that we keep busy when there are 95 with just the nurses we have now. We are using wards 3 - 8 inclusive. Ward 1 has been turned into a lab building and just now ward 2 is being used for a storeroom. The administration building has been almost entirely converted to a lab building too and we will be moving into the new administrative building any day. It's across the "turnabout" and is a Mission Hut. Peggy Somerville's address is 171 Broad St., Catskill, New York. Had you heard. that Katie Colvin and Alex Steigman have announced their engagement? We gues theirs is the only wedding in the offing. You should see us out here in front some Monday, Wednesday or Friday about 5 PM - infantry drill. You'd be proud of us, though we haven't had much practice we don't look so bad. We have classes every day - a training program - all those off duty are required to go. I seem to have rambled without saying anything. All the best to you and your sister, Sincerely, Frances A. Bacon, 2nd Lt. 1st Gen. Med. Lab "A" APO 519 U S Army New York City
