Attachment No. 1
Red Cross Service - Mrs. Anne F. Mahoney
D
Mrs. Mahoney came to the Richmond, Virginia Chapter in 1937 as a Staff Home
Nursing Instructor. Because of the high quality of her work, she was made Director
5
of Nursing Services of the Chapter in 1940. She has served in this capacity ever
since and is recognized throughout the community, the state, and the nation because
5
of the very outstanding job she has done.
e
During World War II Mrs. Mahoney was on loan to the Eastern Area of the
American Red Cross to assist with recruiting of nurses for the Army Nurse Corps.
F
As one who has worked very closely with her for the past 1812 years, and as
her supervisor for the past 16 years, I find it very difficult to find words that
will adequately describe the kind of person and the kind of Red Cross representa-
tive that Anne Mahoney is. She is the most outstanding service director with whom
I have been privileged to work. While she is a very professional person in every
sense of the word, she is a very tender-hearted and compassionate individual. Her
own personal and professional standards are high, and she expects the same from
other staff and volunteers with whom she is associated.
As I have watched Mrs. Mahoney work over the years, as the Chapter Director
of Nursing Services (Programs), I have been particularly pleased with the way she
works with volunteers. She carefully recruits and selects her volunteers, trains
them well, and gives them excellent supervision and support. This statement holds
true not only for instructors in the various nursing fields, but also to committee
chairmen and members. Hers are always working committees!
Mrs. Mahoney is a tireless worker. She works hard at any task assigned her
or of her own choosing. Not only does she do a lot of good, hard work, but the
quality of her work is excellent. She plans and organizes her job well and always
has constructive suggestions for the total Red Cross operation in the Chapter. In
addition to her work in the Richmond Chapter, she has for many years assisted other
neighboring chapters in the organization of their Nursing Services and trained their
instructors - long before the CST concept. She really pioneered in a great many
programs and services "reaching out" into the community. She didn't need to wait
for the current, special effort to extend the Red Cross nursing programs into the
total community. She was already there! In addition, she has been very instru-
mental in bringing back into the profession a great many inactive nurses.
Because of her many qualifications, Mrs. Mahoney was appointed to the Board
of
Visitors of the Medical College of Virginia by Governor J. Lindsay Almond in
June 1961 and was reappointed by Governor Albertis S. Harrison in 1965. She is
only the second woman to have served in this capacity.
To a very large degree, the high esteem in which the Richmond Chapter of the
American Red Cross, and particularly its Nursing Programs and Services are held,
are due to Mrs. Anne F. Mahoney. She is a credit not only to the Richmond Chapter,
but to the entire American National Red Cross. We are proud to recommend her for
the Ann Magnussen Award.
