Z M et ar + 5 L E.IL = April 20, 1945 Miss Ruth W. Hubbard General Director, Visiting Nurse Society 1340 Lombard Street Philadelphia, Pennsylvania L M My dear Miss Hubbard: T I did appreciate your letter of April 12 and it occurred S to us that a personal interview with Mrs. Martin would be the best solution to the problem that you referred to. She spent most of Wednesday afternoon with us and after talking to Miss Dunbar, I reviewed the foreign nursing situation with her. Before she left she asked if we could give her until the 25th for an answer. I agreed to this, stating that if she was interested and her physical examination was approved that we would proceed to process her application for foreign service. Mrs. Martin mentioned, while she was here, that she had received a letter from our medical director asking for additional information regarding her vision. She tried to see Dr. Thibadeau but he was out of the office and his secretary suggested that she talk to Dr. Kurtz. Before going to Miss Dunbar's committee meeting yesterday morning I tried to clear on this question of vision with Dr. Thibadeau but was unable to do so. Ve did, how- ever, suggest that he talk to Dr. Kurtz concerning it and you can imagine my surprise when I learned last evening that they had rejected Mrs. Martin for foreign service because of her vision. They tell me that this is necessary because of the problems involved in securing proper glasses in foreign fields in case anything happens to the ones they are wearing. I do hope that Mrs. Martin will be able to find the kind of a position that she would like. She has a great deal to contribute and we are asking her to keep in touch with us so that if we hear of any openings or positions in which we think she might be interested we con put her in touch with them. Sincerely yours, W 3 (Mrs.) Elsbeth H. Vaughan Assistant Director, Nursing Service EHV:SD 3 8 of
