M Date. received: Oct. 19, 1942 Cablegram received from: London For Amcross 848. Your 643 and 814. Qur 814. Westerman now in Army. Martin full time industrial nurse at Embassy. Situation here changing rapidly and remaining ten nurses supervising first aid rooms in clubs in various cities, doing visiting American troops civilian hospitàls, and spending increasing amount of time on actual nursing duties for our own staff. With constant increase our staff and increased illness account winter conditions as well as other conditions referred to, hereinafter we feel necessity recording our judgnent that all remaining nurses will be required devote greater part of their time to actual nursing. Nursing Service necessary for personnel visiting nurses club here and continuous nursing service there will be essential in 25 bed sick bay being established at request of Army. Similar service our own staff already indicated here. Several nurses have been loaned to nurse or visit ill American officials including high Army personnel and this type of Red Cross service is expected of us and we believe should be available. It is greatly appreciated and most helpful our relationships here. Our whole operation will be greatly handicapped if deprived of this small now actively useful nursing staff and feel very strongly we should look after our own needs rather than call upon already overburdened British nursing resources. Except for two conscientious objectors all nurses have made written commitment enter Army here when requested. General Hawley pleased to have them available here. Wilson Jameson also requests them remain. Because of very important nursing usefulness and Army availability here when needed, suggest illogical waste shipping facilities return them home and earnestly request permission retain them upon understanding situation will be reopened at any time any are not required to fulfill necessary nursing duties here.
