April 22,1942 President, Alumae Association Energency Hospital School of Nursing Niashington, D. C. Dear President: The Alumae Association of the Emergency Hospital School of Nursing vill, I think, be particularly interested in the subject of this letter. As of course you all know, Ruth M. Hartin, from your School, volunteered to serve with the American Red Cross-Harvard Pield Hospital, for communi- cable diseases in England. You have probably followed the interesting experiences the nurses in that group are having in Salisbury now. Per- haps you do not know how valuable their work is. The British Ministry of Health has been most complimentary in regurd to it. As an example of its value, if a single case of typhus fever should appear in England, it is this Unit which would be sent by the Ministry of Health to take measures which there iè every reason to believe would control the terrible menace to the people of Englande lie are all very proud of the work of this group of Red Croos nurses. We hear of it from many different groups of people and always with great respect and admiration for the nurses. It has been decided both by Harvard University and by the Red Crosa that the work of the Unit should continue and it is hoped meny of the present group will decide to remain with it. There could be no more important wor work anywhere than this. You will remember the tragedy of the torpedoing and shipureck of the S.S. Maasden and S.S. Vigrid last June, and you will remember too, I think, that five of these nurses and their housemother, Mrs. Ruth Breckin- ridge, lost their lives then, thoir lifobat wont to picees eiter the terpoross Friends of Urs. Breckinridge have canted to give a nemoria. to her and have felt that the kind or menorial ahe vould have liked best would be a sum of money to be placed with the American Red Cross which would con- stitute a loan fund for the returned nurses of the Red. Cross-Harvard Unit. No one is being asked to give any money to this memorial, but frienda of the Unit are being told about it so that 11 they wish to have a part in building up this fund, the opportunity will be given to then to cio SO. 9 J
