Davis\nRE: MC CALLA, Alice Rita\nHome Service Correspondent\nEx-Nurse\nAmerican Red Cross\nAmerican Red Cross\nNational Headquarters\nWorld War I\nWashington, D. C.\nDear Miss Davis:\nMiss Alice Rita Mc Calla, now living at 2067 Fourth Avenue, San Diego, has\ninquired at this Chapter if there was any provision made by the American\nRed Cross for its workers who served for the Red Cross in World War I.\nMiss Mc Calla was born March 3rd, 1871 in Paulding County, Ohio. She\ngraduated from the Pasadena General Hospital Training School in Pasadena,\nCalifornia, and was appointed as a Red Cross nurse on April 19th, 1919, by\nthe Director at that time, Jane A. Delano. She was assigned Number 34,852.\nShe served as a nurse in Russia for a period of about a year. However, she\nwas never sworn into the Armed Forces and it is our opinion that she has the\nstatus of a civilian, although she feels that she should be entitled to a\npension from the Veterans' Administration, or at least from the Red Cross.\nWe are enclosing a copy of the letter which Miss Mc Calla has in her possession,\ndated May 15th, 1919, from our Hawaiian Chapter, which is self-explanatory.\nMay we ask that you check into your records and advise us if there was any\nprovision made for the nurses who served with the Red Cross overseas in World\nliar I?\nVery truly yours,\n(Mrs.) Nan Couts,\nDirector, Home Service.\nBy\n(Mrs.) Elsie J.
