Mrs. Elsie J. Harsh
Supervisor, Veterans Division
San Diego Chapter
American Red Cross
533 Union Building
San Diego 1, California
My dear Mrs. Harsh:
Your letter regarding Alice Rita McCalla, a
graduate registered nurse who served with the Red Cross in
World War I, has been referred to me for reply.
According to Miss McCalla's folder she served
overseas with the Siberian Commission of the American Red Cross
from May 6 to September 10, 1919. Apparently Miss McCalla was
not inducted into the Army as many of the Red Cross nurses were
at that time. She seems to have served with the Red Cross and
therefore is not entitled to the benefits from the Veterans'
Administration provided for nurses who were inducted into
military service.
Unfortunately the Red Cross has no provision for
pensions or other compensations for Red Cross personnel of World
War I. I hope this information is sufficient for your purposes.
Cordially yours,
Virginia M. Dunbar
