23720 September 23, 1918. Miss Gertrude E. Mill, 795 Cass St., Detroit, Mich. My dear Miss ill: I was exceedingly sorry to receive your letter this morning bringing the news that you feel you must go into the military service. Of course I will release you if it is you final decision to abandon your public health work, but before you do so, I want you to be sure to understand that the Red Cross does not want its public health nurses to go into military service. The care of the health of the people at home is just as.important as that of the soldiers as the latter would be powerless if the Industries at home are not kept up to their maximum. Now more than ever our public health work is improtant and is patriotic. There is great need for nurses in the military service, but we are in hopes of filling this need without taking our public health nurses who have another part of the war program to carry out. I shall wait to hear from you again before I transfer your papers to the military service. Yours sincerely, ssociate Director, Red Cross Bureau of Public Health Nursing. Fx/MM
