Extracted from minutes of the meeting of the National Committee on
Red Cross Nursing Service held at Red Cross Headquarters
December 10, 1935
"The Chairman at this time asked for the resolution on
the death of Miss Lucy Minnigerode, the former Superintendent of
Nurses, U. S. Public Health Service. This'resolution was read:
For the first time we come together without our
dear Lucy Minnigerode - still so vivid in our minds that we
can scarcely think of her as gone from us. The suddenness of
her death on March 24, 1935, increases the sense of her con-
tinued living. We would express once more our love and
affection for her and our appreciation of her loyalty and
service to the American Red Gross.
Her qualities of mind 'and heart were rare. Vigorous,
honest, devoted, sensitive, she carried her responsibilities
and interests with unstinted energy. She first enrolled in
1911. In 1914 she went to Russia on the Red Cross Mercy Ship.
In 1916 she was back in Washington in charge of nursing at
Columbia Hospital, but volunteering service in the organization
of Red Cross hospital units for war service. In 1917 she joined
Miss Delano's staff at the National Red Cross Headquarters.
After the war she organized the nursing service for the return-
ing soldiers at that time in the U. S. Public Health Service.
They were strenuous years. The Marine Hospitals were full of
outworn traditions. There was no place for women to live,
scarcely a place for them to work! In two years there was a
living, working nursing service. The nurses felt and trusted
her leadership. By their fruits ye shall know them.
'To her it was a superb privilege to have been associated
with Miss Delano. For both, the American Red Cross was perhaps
the central expression of their devotion to nursing and patriotic
service.
Not only as a member of this Committee but as an indi-
vidual she continued to express her qualities of leadership, her
vision for nursing service and her eager, vivid thought for the
welfare of the Red Cross and its contribution to the Government
Nursing Services. She had been Chairman of the Nursing Committe
of the local Chapter since 1931.
'Our individual love and affection will not diminish.
May it be spread upon the minutes of this meeting that we mourn
her loss and honor her momory.
The resolution will be spread on the minutes of this meeting
and a copy sent to Miss Minnigerode's family."
