AMERICAN RED CROSS
Siberian Commission
Vladivostok
September 1 1919
To:
Miss Clara D. Noyes
Acting Director, Department of Nursing
Washington, D.C.
From:
Department of Nursing
Eastern Division, Siberian Commission
Re:
Miss Elizabeth Wilson, A.R.C. Nurse 26516
I regret very much to be obliged to inform you that Miss
Elizabeth Wilson, A.R.C. Nurse 26516, was definitely found to be
a subject of alcoholism and was dismissed from duty with the
Siberian Commission on August 29 1919. The authoritative state-
ment of the physicians regarding her will be found attached.
Miss Wilson has been recommended for early transportation.
A cable will be sent to you giving the information regarding the
date of her departure.
Needless to say I am very sorry to have been obliged to
take this action regarding Miss Wilson. She was found to be a
very good worker and was devoted to her patients. When she learned
that the report regarding her had been substantiated, she filed a
resignation which I did not feel justified in accepting, inasmuch as
I had had explicit orders from you to return her to America, and
also inasmuch as she had had repeated warnings. I understand that
she comes from a very good family in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and
that she intends to cable her father from Honolulu to meet her in
San Francisco. I am not notifying Miss White of this affair, as
I feel that it would only add to Miss Wilson's embarrassment. We
will see that she is placed in safe hands for the voyage.
I have asked Miss Wilson to return her pin and Red Cross
Nurses membership card to me. She reported that she did not bring
her card with her, and that she has sent her pin to America to be
repaired. She has been informed that her status in the American Red
Cross Nursing Service will be finally determined by you. I had re-
quested the pin and membership card of her because I thought my
opportunity for securing them was much better than yours would be
in case you decided that you would dismiss her. I explained to her
that these were being asked for only pending the decision in Washington.
