May 1, 1919.
Miss Katherine Flynn,
San Francisco Hospital,
San Francisco, Cal.
My dear Miss Flynn:
In making up the Roll of Honor of
the Red Cross Nursing Service we are particularly anxious
to secure, if possible, the photograph of Miss Alice V.
Murphy, who died in military service overseas. If
you
have a photograph of Miss Murphy, preferably one showing
her in uniform, may I ask that you permit us to borrow it
long enough to copy?
Realizing that in many cases such a
picture is now the only link between the heroic women whô
have made the supreme sacrifice and those who loved them,
we promise that this photograph will be returned in the
condition in which it was sent, and that no use except that
of which the Red Cross Nursing Service would be proud, will
be made of it.
We are, at present, planning to give
these photographs nation-wide publicity through the Red
Cross Divisions. While so much is being said and done for
the troops returning from France, we count it a high privi-
lege to pay what tribute we may to the memory of those nurses,
who no less than the American soldiers "have layed down their
lives for their friends."
Hoping that we may rely upon your
cooperation, believe me as
Very truly yours,
Clara Duys
Acting Director,
Department of Nursing.
