Miss Bertha Murphy was referred to this Department by Miss Hawthorne
as one who might be interested in service with the Hawaiian Unit.
As Miss Murphy has passed her 45th birthday she is not eligible for
service with the military. However, because of her splendid physique,
delightful personality and the fine reports we have had of her nursing service,
7
we referred her to the Army Nurse Corps for consideration for an appointment.
After a personal interview in Col. Flikke's office she reported back to us
that she was considered ineligible for military service because of her age.
Although Miss Murphy has been engaged in private duty ever since her
graduation from the Maryland General Hospital, Baltimore, Maryland, in 1926,
she does seem to possess the qualifications for the Hawaiian service. She is
tall, well-built, nice-looking, has splendid poise and a very attractive
personality. Mrs. Seering has known her for some time and has worked with her
and says that she is a splendid nurse.
At the time of the interview she was not enrolled, so she was given
application papers. When her enrollment is completed her appointment to
service in Hawaii will be considered. She was advised of the fact that this is
to
civilian nursing, that she will be undoubtedly located in an emergency
civilian hospital in a rural area and that the appointment, if made, will be
for the duration. She is willing and eager to serve under these conditions.
(Mrs.) Ernestine B. Amick
Assistant to Director
I
Nursing Service.
