Miss Mary K. Nelson,
Hospital Auxiliaire, No. 43 Bis.,
St. Valery, En-Caux, France.
My dear Miss Nelson:
Miss Emma J. Jones of Rochester, New York is planning to go to
St Valery soon, and I am taking this opportunity to send you a letter so that I may
be sure of its safe delivery.
I was indeed glad to received your last letter and to know that
you are again busy, and only wish it were possible for the Red Cross to send additional
nurse to help out during the winter.
I am very glad of your opionion in regard to the working staff of
the hospital, and am interested in your suggestion that over 40 is more desirable than
below 25.
You will be interested to know that we have sent one hundred and
twenty-four nurses for service on the Border to supplement the Army Nurses already on
duty in the Military Hospital there. We have not sent any volunteer workers with
the groups but are adding them to our Base Hospital Units, and we are all naturally
much interested to see how it will work out in case our units are actually called
into service. The nurses seem much interested in the work on the Border, and I feel
sure that the experience will be valuable to them should a great need ever come to us.
You have doubtless heard of our development of Base Hospital Units in connection with
many of the large hospitals in the Country, and in most instances the Superintendent of
the Training School is acting as chief nurse and is selecting, for the executive posi-
tions of the units, from among the members of her own staff. This will give us a unit
of fifty nurses, and 25 nurses aids who have had at least our course of instruction in
Elementary Hygione and Home Care of the Sick, who will serve without pay. The unit
will also carry a reserve of 15 nurses and 25 volunteer nurses aids. We shall
soon
have about thirty of these base hospital units available which will give us, as you
will see, a large Nursing Personnel ready for service. In addition to this
we
are
also developing Emergency Detachments of Nurses and have called upon them for service
on the Border. They go out without a Medical Personnel and are assigned to the
Military Hospitals. We shall soon begin the organization of detachments of nurses
for service with the Navy which will be larger units but also go out without a Medical
Personnel. It is all very interesting bu has meant a tremendous amount of work
during the past year.
You will be interested to know that Miss Clara D. Noyes, for
several years Superintendent of Training Schools at Bellevue Hospital, is coming to
me this month as Director of the Bureau of Nursing Service and will take charge of
the administrative details of the office, leaving me for work as
Chairman Of the National Committee. I have been overwhelmed with work for the past
two years and have found it absolutely isne sible to continued w; out
