Mr. F. J. Mulhall, Secretary,
March 3, 1922.
Com. on Claims of Personnel.
Miss Mary K. Nelson.
Miss Clara D. Noyes.
I.
I beg to recommend that Miss Mary K. Nelson, Director of
Nursing Service in the New England Division, be allowed an extension
of sick leave from January 31 - February 20, 1922, including the former
date.
2. Sumary of situation. Miss Nelson has already had sick leave from
January 1 - 30, inclusive. Present illness was serious abdominal opera-
tion, performed by a surgeon at the Union Hospital, Fall River, Mass.
primate
3. Social Resources. Miss Nelson is entirely alone, having no one, with
the exception of one sister who is also a wage earner, upon whom she can
depend.
4. Financial report. Miss Nelson served overseas with a special surgical
unit from 1914 until some months following the Armistice, the latter part
of her service was under the American Red Cross. During this time her
salary did not exceed sixty dollars. a month, at times was less than this,
and part of the time without salary as a volunteer.
After her return and suitable rest, during which she earned nothing, she
served under the Red Cross with the Red Cross Chautauqua speakers, during
the summer of 1919. In the autumn of 1919 she took a Public Health Nurs-
ing Course on a Red Cross Scholarship and prepared for a Red Cross posi-
tion.
Her first assignment was to the Gulf Division, in Charge of Public Health
Nursing, where she stayed a few months. With the closing of the Gulf
Division Miss Nelson accepted the appointment as Director of Nursing
Service for the New England Division, on March 12, 1921, at a salary of
$2800.00 a year.
Miss Nelson has been under considerable expense, for the Scholarship did
not cover the cost of her Public Health Course, and I understand she has
been obliged to assist with the care of a sick father, who has recently
died. The operation and hospital bills, while every concession has been
made, have been a considerable expense.
Under these dircumstances, I sincerely trust that Miss Nelson
will be granted this extension of sick leave. Miss Nelson, who is at
devoted and enthusiastic worker, is somewhat embarrassed to know that
the extension is being asked for, but states - that under the circum-
stances she has not been able to save since 1914,-and would I know great-
ly appreciate such consideration.
Sincerely yours,
Director - Nursing Service.
