NEW ENGLAND DIVISION.
Mr. Arthur G. Rotch, Manager.
January 3, 1922.
Miss Clara D. Noyes.
My request for a longer leave of absence than
one month, with pay, for Miss Nelson is based upon the following
arguments.
Miss Nelson served abroad from 1914 - 1918,
part of the time without salary as a volunteer, and at all times
for a very small salary, which robably did not exceed sixty
dollars at any one time. She was working with Dr. Fitch's Unit
and continued to serve with that Unit until after the Armistice,
with the full approval of the American Red Cross Nursing Service.
I am under the impression that she has no
resources over and above that which she earns. Upon Miss Nelson's
return from overseas, in order to prepare herself to take up work
again in this country she spent a year in post-graduate work and
only hogan to earn money when assigned to the Southern Division
which was a fow months before she went to the New England Division.
Insamuch as this is the case and as Miss Nelson is receiving a
comparatively small salary, and that her expenses will be very
heavy, it seemed to me that it would be a gracious thing for the
Division to recommend an extension of her leave of absence, over
and above the month, with pay. Miss Nelson apparently feels the
importance of getting back to work, for she is hoping to resume
her activities after a six weeks' absence, but as the operation
is a sorious one, this would seem to me a very doubtful course
for her to pursue.
I could not of course present this to the
Claims Commi tee without your approval and I should not wish to
consult Mias Nelson in advance, and furthersore I should certainly
not wish anything more to be done for Miss Nelson than would be
done for anyone else in the Division or @loewhere who might be
placed in a similar position. Extensions of sick leave, with pay,
have been given individuals with larger salaries and who have not
four years of war record to their credit. Mr. Persons has been
away, but I discussed the matter with a member of the Claims
Committee who felt there would be absolutely no objection to a
requent of this nort being filed. If, however, you are opposed
to making this recommendation, please any nothing further about it.
Sincerely yours,
Director - Nursing Service.
