Miss Mary M. Roberts
Editor, American Journal of Nursing
50 West 50th Street
New York City, New York
My dear Miss Roberts:
I am returning the article on Miss Noyes and
there are no words in which to tell you how beautiful it is. I
do not find any inaccuracies for I have checked with her biography
and there is nothing which you have omitted. You will note that I
have filled in the number of nurses assigned to war service. I
really could not make any suggestions because I think the nurses
will, one/and all, agree that this is by far the most beautiful
tribute to diss Noyes' memory that has been or can be paid.
I am going to try to write a long letter to
Florence Johnson tonight in answer to one received from her, which
I hope she will share with you.
The service in Lyme was beautiful and it was
very gratifying that so many of the nurses from Boston, New York,
Rhode Island and Connecticut attended. It was a perfect day, the
kind that Miss Noyes used to call "a Lyme day".
You will be delighted to hear that yesterday
norning Admiral Grayson sent for me to come and see him. Feeling
that I was in a position to speak frankly because of my own retire-
ment in the near future, I think I game him a great deal of infor-
mation for serious thought and consideration. Many of the things 1
told him he had not known. I carried to him a complete list of the
National Committee personnel with their addresses and you will be
relieved to know that he assured me that there would be no haste
used in the appointment of Miss Noyes' successor; that he would act
upon the advice of the National Committee that he thought the matter
would rest until fall at the earliest when he would, he hoped, be able
to return to the office in better health. He is leaving today for a
vacation.
I have since found out that Wiss Boardman went out
to see the Admiral in the afternoon, that she heartily agreed with
him on the need for careful deliberation before selecting Miss Noyes'
